Access by car

Reserve a rental car

Driving route to Yusuikyo

Use Google Maps or your car navigation system to find the best route to Yusuikyo from Kumamoto City or Kumamoto Airport.

Overview of Yusuikyo Gorge

This gorge consists of the head rock(welded tuffs)of Aso-4 pyroclastic flow deposits.
At the time of caldera foeming eruption of Aso volcanoes about 90,000 years ago which is defined as Aso-4 eruption, pyroclastic flow s flowed out and stuck together gue to the hghtemperature reaching over 650 degree.
Celsius as wellas the pressure from piled up pyroclastic flow deposits,then formed welded tuffs.
In yusuikyo Gorge,we can observe many characteristic structures including horizontally lined up lensoid obsidian which is the characteristic of welded tuffs and regularly-structured cracks(columnar joints)that are formed as a result of contraction during cooling in Aso-4 pyroclastic flow deposits.
Thickness of the Aso pyroclastic deposits is more than 100m. This geosite is a wonderland where we can think about caldera forming enormous eruption of Aso volcansoes, and discover wonders of natural forms created by Aso pyroclastic flow.

Charming waterfall

Commonly known as “Kappa Falls”

Kappa Falls is a waterfall located at the back of Yusuikyo Gorge, and you can reach it by walking about 700 meters along the promenade from the parking lot.
The drop is about 20m, which is not very big, but it is exhilarating.
There is a legend of a kappa, and it is said that the name “Kappa Falls” was given to it.
Please enjoy the waterfall, which changes its appearance depending on the season you visit.

Commonly known as “Waterfall of Encounter”

It is a 10 minute walk upstream from the parking lot.
As you walk along the promenade, you can see a waterfall flowing from another stream.
This is the waterfall of encounter.

From downstream, Yusuikyo has the following waterfalls: Yusui Falls, Deai Falls, Seseragi Falls, and Kappa Falls.
